There are many rules for proper use of the side reins. They should be attached to the bit and not buckled up when introducing them to your horse this way they can slide if the horse objects to the pressure..

They should only be used on a flat and even surface with plenty of grip i.e., a smooth riding area. Not on slippery grass!

The side reins go from the bit to the girth or surcincle, just slightly above the girth. Use a saddle pad with girth loops and put the sidereins above the girth loops so that they are even and in line with the nose and point of shoulder.

Take your time to introduce them to the horse by only walking the horse in hand. Make sure your horse stays relaxed throughout the process.
