How much should a Horse eat daily?

Horses are large animals and they need quite a bit of bulk because naturally they are grazers. It is especially important when we keep a horse in a backyard situation or a stable we are responsible to provide a horse with enough feedstuffs.

A good table to follow is taking the height of the horse and multiplying that by 2 .

Add or subtract 3

Then you will have the total pounds per day .

Example A 15 hand horse would get 27 to 33 pounds per day .

These pounds are divided into bulk(hay and grass)and short feed (bagged ,commercially sold).

For most horses you will need to have 2/3 in bulk and 1/3 short feed of the total amount.

Horses are fed according size, weight ,age , temperament ,and work done .

For Example

A race horse will get 1/3 in bulk and 2/3 total short feed per day .

If you have an ample amount of pasture for grazing you will determine how much short feed or hay you will need to supplement .

Look at each horse every day to make sure his weight is sufficient.

If you are not sure you can use a weight tape or ask your vet to advise .
