Care for the older horses

We love our aged horse companions and they do require special care .

When they have lost the ability to masticate their food especially hay products we must make sure they get enough roughage in their diet on a daily basis .

Even though you have had your horse’s teeth examined yearly by the dentist you ;

A. May see your older horse having problems by choke or coughing when they try to eat hay .

B. May see long pieces of partially chewed hay that looks like cigars on the ground where they eat .

This can lead to other complications.

A good remedy for this is to feed alfalfa or hay pellets that have been soaked overnight or for several hours depending on how hot it is outside.

You don’t want these to foment in the warmer weather.

There are several products sold on your local feed stores .

About 1 to 3 pounds

twice a day is sufficient for most horses.
