Winter horse care

Water is the most important part of caring for your horses .

Horses can easily become dehydrated from frozen watering arrangements.

If you are using buckets in their stalls then you must be vigilant about keeping the water from freezing.

Give your horse access to ice free buckets as much as possible but not by using buckets that have electric wiring .

This type of bucket is a fire hazard.

Instead start with using ice free water and then go and break the ice as it forms as much as possible.

Electric plug in water heaters are ok for the outside run in shed paddocks but you must check for proper gfi connections and cords that are heavy gauged.

Also make sure that they are properly grounded so that the water does not shock the horses when they drink .

Cut short feeds pellets and grains in half and provide more hay if you don’t think the horses have had adequate water intake.

Each horse should drink 8 to 10 gallons per day.

Observe your horses to make sure they are not shivering.

If they are cold double up on the blankets but make sure that the blankets are safe and the horse doesn’t get caught up them .

Good luck and stay warm and safe!!!
