Horse care is extremely important in winter months .
Remember that horses need access to unfrozen water ,this is most important.
Do not feed dehydrated pellets or cubes if you are not sure how much the horses have had to drink .
Hay is best .
An average size horse needs 8 to 10 gallons of water per day .
Make sure your horses are well fed( mostly good quality hay) and plenty of water .
Your safety working outside is paramount.
Clothe yourself in many warm layers .You can always take some off if you are too warm .
Natural fibers work best in extreme cold .
Hands should have insulated gloves and be kept dry .
Proper footwear such as taller boots for snow and strap on cleats for icy ground are a must .
Blankets must fit well with straps that are correctly fitted .
No big gaps underneath the horses belly but not too tight either .
Double blanketing for clipped horses and hoods .
Observe your horse to make sure he is warm enough but not overheating.
