When temperatures are dipping down into the single digits…
Special care is needed especially overnight.
Check to make sure that your horses are warm and out of the wind .
Layer blanketing making sure that the straps are secure and neither tight nor too loose .
Check on your horses as often as possible doing at least one late night check to crack ice in the stall buckets .
If your horses live outside make sure they have plenty of access to unfrozen water for example fast flowing stream and /or electric water heated trough .
Make sure your horses are not getting shocked by having proper grounds connected to your outside water trough heaters .
Stand there and watch them drink .
Plenty of dry bedding in their stalls and run in sheds will help to insulate them from the cold .
Late night check also to make sure they feel warm (feels ears and middle front of chest )and they are acting normally not shivering or stressed -change blanketing if needed.
Encourage drinking to avoid dehydration.Warm water can be added to their buckets or removing the ice .
I don’t recommend heated water buckets as the are unsafe in the barn due to risk of fire .
Do not use any type of element or space heaters in your stables even if tempted to !
Good Luck
