Schooling your horse in the arena and on level ground is a good way to get your horse trained and obedient to the riders aids.
It is also very important to ride your horse on some hills and over more natural trails. This gives him a different type of workout than riding on a level surface all of the time .
Riding out on natural trails and some hills and even crossing streams will introduce your horse to water and and many other things that encourage boldness and expand their experiences.
This becomes an all around training tool that serves both physical and mental pleasure for the horses and riders!
Young horses and riders should be brought out with more experienced lead horses that are quiet and used to the trails. Young riders can be lead either on horseback or on foot.
For riding and leading you must have a well behaved horse that will not pin the ears back or threaten to kick .
The lead rider must be able to ride with the reins in one hand whilst holding the lead line close to the shoulder of the lead horse .
The young horse being lead must keep his nose lined up with the leaders right knee .

Once your horse is confident about moving forward along the trail he could sometimes be asked to go into the lead position .
It’s important that you maintain at least one horses’ length between you and the rider in front of you .So that you don’t get kicked .
Good manners indicate that you be in control of your mount at all times and always wait for the rider that open and shuts the gates to get back on their horse before moving off .
