Postural Restoration in Riding

Published by

Maintaining a correct position when riding the horse is important for balance and allows the horse to be

able to carry you and himself well .

You must work on your position so that your heels, hips and shoulders are aligned and your head is in the center of your shoulders not in front of your shoulders i.e. looking down.

You will need to make sure that your shoulders and hips are ,from side to side, equal in their distance apart.

In other words, not collapsing your rib cage on one side or another.

You may have to check your position from time to time to make sure that your horse hasn’t pulled you out of alignment for example;

during the canter

cantering too fast

or imbalanced

uneven diagonal pairs of legs in the trot

or not standing evenly on the hind legs

horse leaning on the bit

will cause the rider to lose their postural alignment.

The problem with this is that then the horses become unbalanced themselves so it can be a vicious cycle !!
