How to decide if you can ride? Many factors determine how much weight a horse or pony can carry on their back:

  • Horses Build – does your horse have big bones or fine bones? Is your horse broad or narrow? Thoroughbred or Draft?
  • Age – young and old horses can not carry as much weight as a horse in their prime
  • balance and fitness of rider – A horse can carry 5% more if the rider is skilled and fit.
