The Importance of the Hand Position on the Reins

The rider’s hands should hold the reins correctly.

The reins are held in a soft fist ( fingertips just gently touching the palms) but your thumbs should be tight to prevent the horse from slipping the reins out of your hands .

Thumbs should be on top with the wrists slightly rounded and soft not locked .

It’s like holding an imaginary mug in each hand and not spilling it .

Many riders “ plant “ their hands by turning the hands down and the thumbs in .This will turn the bit rings into the side of the horse’s cheek making it uncomfortable for him.
