There are many other causes of colic in the horse other than dehydration.
They may be poor quality or moldy feed stuffs,worms, feeding to much at one time(short feeds such as pellets and grains) irregular feed schedules, any major change in diet such as too much lush grass pasture after being kept in a stable .
Twisted gut /enteritis or any internal problem.
Any horse kept in an upsetting situation for example,fence walking ,separating a mare from a foal ,isolation , etc. could also be a cause of colic.
Signs of Colic Include
Sweating and blowing ,pawing the ground ,getting up and down or rolling ,bloated belly and lack of gut sounds .
In the case of twisted gut these symptoms are more severe with a higher temperature and sweating due to pain .
Treatment
In most cases it is advisable to call your veterinarian.
If your horses’ symptoms are mild the vet may at least be put on call .
In severe cases especially twisted gut the horse should be sent to surgery or euthanized.
Your veterinarian will advise .
Good stable management is the best way to lessen the risk of colic in the horse.
